Kitten season has begun! What is kitten season you may ask? This is the most common time of year for unspayed females to become pregnant. Usually, in the northern hemisphere, kitten season occurs from March-June, but sometimes extending the entire summer.
A kitten usually goes into heat anywhere between 5-9 months old. They can go into heat every 2 weeks throughout this season and will do whatever it takes to find a tom cat (unneutered male) and create a litter. Domestic cats have induced ovulations-which mean they release an egg once bred to ensure the egg meets the sperm. Once the litter is born, the mother can go into heat again quickly after giving birth, even before the kittens are weaned.
The best way to help is to make sure you spay or neuter your pets! Females ideally should be spayed before going into heat. If they do go into heat, make sure that they stay inside. Adopting from shelters is also a big way to help!
Product Spotlight:
Catlax: Cat lax is a cod liver oil based gel that helps eliminate and pass hair balls in the cat. When our cats start to shed their coats in the spring, hair balls are likely to increase due to increased grooming. Introducing cat lax 1-2 times a week can make passing hairballs easier for your cat.
Fun Fact:
The cat was worshipped as a symbol of fertility in ancient Egypt. Bastet, the Egyptian goddess of fertility, was portrayed as a cat!
